Best guitar course I got, the organization is really good and straightforward if you want to progress, also including challenges to test your new skills. Can't recommend enough, learned so much I missed out early on my journey.

The way you split it up in little portions made it easier to digest ;) It really motivated me to stay on track and didn’t feel overwhelming.

I learned more in 2 days than in the previous 20 years.

Does this sound familiar?

  • You practice for hours but barely feel like you're improving
  • You think you're doing the right things... but you're not sure
  • You can’t express yourself freely across the whole fretboard
  • You don't really understand the theory behind what you're playing
  • You keep hoping things will click, but there’s no clear plan to make it happen

The #1 Reason Guitarists Stay Stuck

I‘ve spent more than 15 years and $50,000 learning to play guitar.

When I started out, I wanted to become really good. The problem was that I had no idea where to begin. So I was just playing and hoping for the best.

To help me on the journey, I got different guitar teachers and studied music at school. I even moved to a different country and spent three years on an expensive music degree at LIPA (the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts).

During these intense years, I practiced for hours every single day. But even at an advanced level, I still didn’t feel the complete guitar control I wanted.

What was I missing?

As the years went by, I learned a few small lessons here and there. And I was slowly filling important gaps in my playing. Eventually, all the dots finally started to connect.

Guitar made sense.

Not with more talent. Not with more practice.

I figured out that getting good on guitar is a bit like climbing steps. If you miss one step on the journey, you will struggle. This is why most guitar players stay stuck.

But if you have all the steps, all you have to do is to follow them.

After finishing my studies at LIPA in 2019, I moved back to Norway. Here I started to teach my concepts to 35 different guitar students every week.

And they all drastically improved. Because I knew exactly what they needed at every point.

One of my students even sent me this message:

"I’m absolutely thrilled about everything you’ve taught me. I honestly can’t thank you enough! Seriously."

What made it finally click?

All the guitar students just followed my step-by-step system.

How to Actually Improve on Guitar Without Wasting Time

It boils down to these two things:

  • Figure out exactly you need to learn (in the right order)
  • Find the best way to get good at those things

That’s it. The problem is that it takes years to figure those things out. But once you know them, you just have to follow them.

Luckily, I’ve already spent more than 15 years (and $50,000) figuring these things out, so you don’t have to.

Instead, you can just follow what already is proven to work. This is the closest thing to a shortcut you’ll ever come.

I’m enjoying the shorter focused lessons of Play with a Plan. They keep me motivated and wanting to continue. I’m beginning to see the benefits. Simen’s relaxed teaching style and the structured Success Path of Play with a Plan are a winning combination.

Frequently asked questions

What is really required by me?
Just follow the success path and you’re good!
Is there actually a specific order I should learn things on guitar?
Yes. For example, it’s impossible to understand the theory behind chords if you don’t understand the major scale first. Stuff like this is really hard to know unless someone tells you about it.
What are the courses inside the success path like?
Each course goes into a specific topic (for example: Master the Major Scale). Most lessons inside the courses will have: A video lesson, 1-3 exercises and a challenge.

The video lesson will teach you something new. This is straight-to-the-point and around 5 minutes. Then 1-3 perfectly designed exercises to make sure you actually get better at what you just learned. Lastly, a challenge to make sure you truly understand what you just learned. This will also make sure you can actually use it in real music. Implementation is key.
I don’t know what to practice. Will Play With a Plan help with that?
Yes, all you have to do is to follow the success path.
What if I'm not talented enough?
Here’s a little secret: Research suggests that we learn the best when we feel challenged, not when we feel things are easy. If you practice the right things, put in the work and actually challenge yourself, it’s almost impossible to not become better. All courses inside the success path have challenges to do just this.
Who are you?
If you haven't been following me on my socials, you might ask who I am. My name is Simen Otnes and I’m a guitarist, music producer and graphic designer from Norway. Already when I started playing guitar at the age of 12, I wrote practice journals and obsessed about achieving my guitar goals. I believe there are some skills you need to work harder for (such as technical skills), but sometimes it’s just about knowing the right things, which is crazy to me.

I have played in around 10 different bands in Norway and the UK, played at some of the biggest stages in Norway and I also have a bachelor’s degree in music from LIPA (The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) which looks good on paper. Hooray. I'm also a professional graphic designer.

Who is Play With a Plan for?
Electric guitar players who want a step-by-step path to consistently improve their playing.
Who is Play With a Plan not for?
It's not suitable for complete beginners at this point (but it will be in the future). The courses are made with electric guitar in mind, but a lot is obviously transferable to acoustic guitar. It's also not suitable for people who likes slow progress ;)
Do you have to be a serious guitarist?
If you're playing guitar just for fun and look for some inspiration and new ideas, that's also completely fine. If you want to reach a professional level, that's also possible with Play With a Plan.
